Making UV Protection Last

I completed a several-month internship at the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), where I developed essential laboratory skills and gained hands-on experience in scientific research. Under the dedicated guidance of my mentor, I learned to perform laboratory procedures, handle research equipment, and approach scientific problems with greater precision and critical thinking. This experience strengthened my understanding of the research process, deepened my interest in scientific exploration, and provided me with valuable practical knowledge for my future academic pursuits. I investigated how ZnO–SiO₂ compositions affect the durability of UV-protective cotton, particularly after repeated washing. What fascinated me most was how a small change in material composition could make a substantial difference in performance. The 50 wt% ZnO–SiO₂ formulation retained approximately 82% of its initial zinc after 20 wash cycles, compared with 42% for bare ZnO — a finding that strengthened my interest in designing materials that last.
